The latest Windows 11 update doesn’t play well with Ubisoft games Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Assassin’s Creed Origins, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Star Wars Outlaws, and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, Microsoft warned on Nov. 22.
“After installing Windows 11, version 24H2, you might encounter issues with some Ubisoft games,” Microsoft said. “These games might become unresponsive while starting, loading or during active gameplay. In some cases, users might receive a black screen.”
Ubisoft released a hotfix addressing the Windows 11 bugs in Star Wars Outlaws on Nov. 21 shortly after the forced stealth-focused update, but Microsoft added there may still be performance issues. A compatibility hold has been placed on computers with these specific Ubisoft games installed until a permanent solution can be found.
“We recommend that you do not attempt to manually update to version 24H2 using the Windows 11 Installation Assistant or the media creation tool until this issue has been resolved,” Microsoft said.
If you’ve been affected and can’t exit your game normally, Microsoft suggested using Task Manager to end the task via the Process tab, instructions I can only assume are meant for Boomers and Zoomers, because what self-respecting Millennial doesn’t already know how to do this?
Windows 11, version 24H2 dropped on Oct. 1. It’s unclear which of the update’s many features were incongruous with Ubisoft games specifically, but knowing how finicky computers can be, I’m going to pick randomly from the list and say maybe it was… the “more streamlined File Explorer,” whatever that means.
